So after Sunday's Golden Globes I set out to watch Lena Dunham's "Girls". All I really knew of the show were the promos I'd seen on HBO and the very polarizing opinions on ONTD.
Well. I finished the 1st season early this morning. I have to say that through most of the season while I respect the amount of work that Lena Dunham puts into the show as writer, director, producer, and star... I found most episodes pretty boring and wondering where the past half-hour had gone as not much had happened. It was a show about "the every woman" but it really wasn't and then when you take away the comedy and the drama... its just awkward sexual encounters. Did this show win an award because people just love awkward silences and weird motivations?
I appreciated what the show was supposed to be but it seemed to have fallen short on more than one occasion. There weren't really any characters I could relate to for more than a few seconds and I found myself confused about what I was missing and how this show was award winning. A reply was left to me on ONTD trying to explain the love for the show and while I understood, I didn't agree.
Then I got to the last two episodes. The final two episodes of season 1 seemed to finally accomplish the goal that the entire first season was trying to get too. Things finally fell into place and I just, got it. I see what this show was supposed to be about and I see why someone would think this show deserved to be recognized. To be completely honest it was the final scene that really gave me an appreciation for the show. It was the perfect ending to a show that I don't think had a perfect beginning.
Whether or not I stick with the show through season 2 is a completely different question. But I thought I'd just go ahead and point out the fact that I might have been wrong to automatically scoff at Lena Dunham's multiple wins on Sunday night.
So there it is. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd suggest giving it a chance. You might like it or you might hate it. It really just depends on the person but I'd say to try to get through to the end of the first season because that's where it all made sense to me.
